Dr. Valerie Camille Jones was recently honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, which is America’s highest honor in math and science for teachers. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Spelman College and continued her studies by earning masters and doctoral degrees in mathematics education from Georgia State University and Columbia University respectively. She holds certification in elementary education, middle grade mathematics. 7-12 mathematics, educational leadership, instructional supervision, and gifted in field. Dr. Jones is also a national board certified mathematics instructor and a certified California Studio teacher.
For over 20 years, Dr. Jones has worked in the field of mathematics education. Jones has trained more than 500,000 teachers from across the globe on her instructional methods. She has presented her techniques at several universities, created video modules for Teach for America to showcase best practices; and has been a featured presenter at the largest educational technology conventions in London and the United States. Each year, Dr. Jones is a coach for middle school students in the MATHCOUNTS video challenge national competition and her teams have won 1st place five times in the last six years. In the fall of 2015, Dr. Jones was also recognized by Congressman John Lewis at the 114th Congress 1st Session. Georgia Trend Magazine named her to their Top 40 Under 40 List for her contributions in the field of education and Mental Floss magazine presented her with the Platypus Award for her commitment to education. In 2017, Dr. Jones was a guest speaker at the World Science Fair in NY and was featured on a Comcast special sponsored by McDonalds called The People Behind the People. Dr. Jones is also an educational recording artist featured on the album Encore! created by I Am Other and Old Navy. The video of her song has accumulated over 1.7 millions views.
Dr. Jones is greatly respected for her creative approach in making the most difficult subjects accessible and tangible to her students. Dr. Jones teaches her students how to effectively use mathematical models as communication tools. In the classroom, she develops art and video game simulations to connect students to math and coordinates field trips to provide real-life examples of the influence of math. Dr. Jones is a champion of promoting math esteem in general. Currently, Dr. Valerie Camille Jones teaches mathematics at Ron Clark Academy . RCA is a highly acclaimed, nonprofit demonstration middle school a place where visiting educators engage in a vibrant professional development experience by observing best practice in action before participating in hands-on workshops.
